HISTORY OF ST. MARK UME CHURCH

As the eagle in Deuteronomy 32:11 stirred her nest, personal conviction motivated our forefathers, time after time, to separate themselves from places of comfort and move on toward an uncertain destiny.  But throughout their historical journey, we see how the eagle, faith, spread her wings to bear them up and onward.

At the General Conference of May 1912, a disagreement arose.  The differences were not resolved and a group of  Ministers and delegates renounced the leadership and walked out of the conference.

On July 26, 1913, a group of delegates assembled in convention under the leadership of Reverend Joseph A. Ellison. Business conducted at the convention included the adoption of the name Union Methodist Church and the election of Rev.  Ellison as President.

On  July 26, 1913, St. Mark RMUE was renamed St. Mark Union Methodist Church along with two other Churches. At this time Rev. Ellison was the Pastor of St. Mark.

On May 4, 1914, the first general conference of the Union Methodist Church was convened. At this conference the Episcopacy in all its forms was adopted, and so the Union  Methodist  Episcopal Church was formed. Therefore, we are Methodists governed by a by a Book of Discipline that sets forth the bylaws of the Church.

The original Church burned down in 1918.  A new structure was rebuilt under the   late Rev. Gary.  In August 1973, the  present  structure was rebuilt and constructed  under the Leadership of Reverend Q.B. Conyers.
