Biography of Reverend Gloria S. Brown
Reverend Gloria S. Brown is the eldest of five daughters of the Revs. James & Maybelle Sumter of Johns Island, SC. She is a member of St. Mark Union Methodist Episcopal Church (UME) in the Red Top section of Johns Island, where she is the Pastor.
For the past 27 years, Reverend Gloria S. Brown has been married to Mr. Bobby J. Brown of Johns Island, SC. They have five children and nine grandchildren.
Reverend Brown is a graduate of St. Andrews Parish High School, Charleston, SC. She furthered her education in Business Administration in Washington, DC where she lived for nine years. Reverend Gloria S. Brown is a graduate of the Pastoral Caregiver Program at Trident Health Systems, in Summerville, SC and The International Seminary of Plymouth, Florida. She served as volunteer for 3 years at the Adult Day Care facility in Charleston and is the former Chaplain of the Burke High School J.R.O.T.C. Booster Club. Reverend Brown has served in many Women’s Conferences, and for the past 6 years, alongside Apostle Doris Johnson of Doris Johnson Ministries Inc., she has taught and preached the Word of God at S.C Department of Parole & Pardon Services as well as Lieber Correctional Institution’s Death Row population. Reverend Brown also served at Trident Health Systems as a Pastoral Caregiver for 2 years, and is a Member of the Coalition of African American Churches.
Reverend Brown preached her initial sermon on March 29, 1992 and was ordained on November 8, 1996, at the Annual Conference of the Union Methodist Episcopal Church under the hand of the Rt. Rev. George M. Lang, Bishop. She received her first Pastoral charge in November 2002, at Olden Chapel UME Church in Sumter, SC, where she was the first woman assigned as Pastor of that Church. Reverend Brown has been in vineyard - preaching and ministering to God’s people for 21 years.
On Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Effingham Baptist Church in Marion SC, Reverend Brown, received an Honorary Award as Outstanding Leading Woman and Pastor of the Year for her dedicated and devoted Christian Charitable work.
On December 11, 2010, at the 98th Annual Conference of the Union Methodist Episcopal Church, held at New Hope UME Church, Pinewood, SC, Reverend Gloria S. Brown made history as the First Woman Presiding Elder of eight Churches in the Sumter District of the UME Church. This appointment was made under the hand of the Rt. Rev. Leroy T. James, Bishop.
Reverend Gloria S. Brown has a love for the homeless. Every winter she and Bro. Bobby Brown hit the streets providing the homeless with coats, hats, gloves, blankets etc.
